Container Gardening For the Patio
When my parents needed to downsize the biggest issue they faced was how to enjoy freshly picked vegetables and fruits from a fenced in concrete patio roughly 20′ x 15′. The problem was easily solved with container gardening in various sized pots.
The garden would require at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight. There was not a lack of sun but an over abundance. A simple gazebo solved the problem by providing midday shade and enabled plants and flowers requiring less sun to round out the selection.
They decided on their favorite vegetables and discovered a little area of in ground planting for a columnar apple tree and blueberries. We made a list of the necessary ingredients to go into their container gardening. Water was nearby and an irrigation system was by purchased for the containers. Containers were selected for both their decorative and practical qualities. The pots needed to drain well and used fabric dryer sheets were placed over the drainage holes to prevent the soil from escaping.
Different sized pots were selected with the smallest being 3-gallon for herbs, lettuce, carrots and flowers, and 30 gallons for tomatoes and peppers. The tomatoes were trellised.
A couple of chairs and a bench and the design for the container garden were set up. The pots were arranged around the seating area with the big pots for tall veggies in back and then the rest of the containers in descending order with the lettuce being in front.
A complete garden mix with moisture control and a balanced fertilizer was used to simplify the planting process. During the growing season only a small amount of fertilizer is needed as the containers are compact.
Plants were also spaced depending on watering needs and growing season. Flowers and perennial transplants finished off the patio grouping. Lettuce and herbs are voracious drinkers and lived together very happily in the same container.
